A broken heart isn't something to hide—it's a story to be told, a pain to be acknowledged, and a wound ready for healing. HeartbreakHaikus™ is grounded in a simple truth: sometimes the best way to move forward is to honor the ache of what's been lost by talking about it, by creating art around it, by healing out loud.
Heartbreak is a process. We get through it. Art helps us connect. Art helps us survive.
Writing haiku was one of the ways that I got through the end of my marriage and the first two years of my divorce. When I couldn’t sleep because of racing thoughts, I would start writing. I found that if I could “trap” my thoughts in a carefully crafted container of 5-7-5 syllables, then I could usually quiet my mind enough to get some rest.
A haiku—with its precise syllable structure—forces emotion into a concise form that makes an impactful statement. This structure mirrors the moment of realization after a loss: a sudden, clear thought amidst the chaos. Healing often brings with it a series of epiphanies. Working through those realizations within the structure of a tightly-crafted poem allows us to strip overbearing emotions into their most poignant images or ideas.
You won't find these verses anywhere else. HeartbreakHaikus™ original poems are written not to wallow in the sorrow, but to offer a small, poetic space for validation and hope...and sometimes some much-needed laughter.
